92-Year-Old Jailed for Life Over 1967 Widow’s Rape and Murder

A 92-year-old man has been locked up for life, with a minimum 20-year term, for the shocking rape and murder of a 75-year-old widow nearly six decades ago.

Ryland Headley, now an Ipswich resident, was found guilty at bristol/" title="Bristol" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">Bristol Crown Court of killing Louisa Dunne in her home in Easton, Bristol, back in June 1967. This chilling case is the UK’s longest cold case to ever reach a trial.

Cold Case Cracked by Modern DNA Science

The grisly murder stumped police for over 50 years until Avon and Somerset Police re-examined forensic clues using fresh DNA technology.

  • A DNA sample from the original crime scene, along with a palm print, finally tied Headley to the scene where neighbours found Ms Dunne’s body.
  • Modern forensic methods revealed a match to Headley’s DNA profile, sealing his fate.

Violent History Comes to Light

At the time of the murder, Headley was a 34-year-old railway worker. A decade later, he was convicted of raping two elderly women in 1977, revealing a terrifying pattern of targeting vulnerable seniors.

“He showed a tendency to break into homes at night, targeting elderly women who lived alone,” prosecutors told the court. “He used violence and sexual assault even when his victims attempted to resist.”

Headley denied all charges but was found guilty of rape and murder by a jury. He refused to give evidence in his own defence.

Police Probe Possible Links to Other Crimes

When sentencing, the judge slammed the “appalling brutality” of the attack and acknowledged the decades-long pain for Ms Dunne’s family.

Officers are now digging deeper to see if Headley could be linked to other unsolved violent crimes against elderly women across the UK.

Police Praise Forensic Breakthrough

A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Police said: “This case demonstrates the power of forensic science and our commitment to bringing justice—no matter how long it takes. Our thoughts remain with the family of Louisa Dunne, who have waited 58 years for justice.”
