A man has been arrested after nearly £23,000 worth of property was stolen from a lorry at a service station near Gillingham, Kent in the early hours of Friday, April 11. The drama unfolded on the busy M2 motorway when a vigilant security guard spotted suspicious activity around parked vehicles and called police immediately.
High-Speed Pursuit Ends in East London
Officers found the lorry had been targeted while the driver slept in the cab. Police launched a swift search along the London-bound carriageway. Later that day, a truck was stopped in Cadogan Terrace, Stratford, East London. Here, police arrested a suspect and recovered boxes of shoes worth almost £23,000.
Suspect Charged and Remanded
Michael Tremarco, 35, from St Agnes Drive, Canvey Island, Essex, faces charges including theft, driving without insurance, and driving without a valid licence. He appeared at Medway Magistrates’ Court on Saturday, April 12, and was remanded in custody. Tremarco is set to appear at Maidstone Crown Court on Friday, May 9.
Ongoing Investigation and Security Concerns
Kent Police have not ruled out further arrests as the investigation continues. Authorities praised the security guard whose quick thinking led to the recovery of the stolen goods and the suspect’s capture.
This incident is part of a worrying uptick in thefts targeting parked lorries on UK motorways. Calls are mounting for beefed-up overnight security at service stations nationwide.
