Man Charged After Threatening Police with Axe in Gillingham

Early Morning Axe Drama on Chaucer Road

Chaos erupted at 2:36am on Tuesday, 10 December 2024, when police were called to reports of a smashed car window on Chaucer Road, Gillingham. Two officers arrived on the scene, only to face a terrifying threat. A suspect, armed with an axe, allegedly assaulted one of the constables and tried to make a run for it.

Suspect Chased and Caught Near Town Centre

After a tense foot chase, 44-year-old Mark Cork from East Street, Chatham, was caught close to Gillingham town centre. He was promptly taken into custody by police.

Multiple Charges and Court Date Set

  • Assaulting an emergency worker
  • Possession of an axe in a public place
  • Two counts of threatening with a bladed article

Cork was remanded in custody and is due to appear before Medway Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, 11 December.

Police Update: No Serious Injuries

Authorities confirmed that none of the officers suffered serious injuries during the frightening incident. Investigations into the axe attack are continuing.
