Man charged with murder after elderly man dies from Covent Garden assault

Tragedy in Covent Garden

James “Jim” O’Neill, 74, has died after suffering serious injuries in an attack in Covent Garden last month. Police were called to Odhams Walk on Sunday, 6 October just before noon, where they found Jim gravely injured. Despite emergency treatment, he passed away two weeks later, on 21 October.

Suspect arrested and charged

Police quickly arrested Trevor John Gocan, 57, from Odhams Walk, on the day of the assault. He has now been charged with Jim’s murder and is due to appear at Southwark Crown Court on Tuesday, 5 November.

Investigation ongoing, public urged to help

Detective Inspector Rebecca Woods, leading the case, praised witnesses who gave first aid to Jim at the scene. She said: “This was a distressing incident with many people stepping in to help. We continue our enquiries and ask anyone with further information to come forward.”

Specialist officers are supporting Jim’s family through this difficult time.
