Chemical Leak Shuts Down Swim Pool Owned by Olympic Champion Rebecca Adlington
A chemical leak at a swimming pool partially owned by double Olympic gold medallist Rebecca Adlington caused panic this morning. One swimmer was rushed to hospital, and another treated for breathing difficulties following the incident.
Emergency Services Rush to Scene in Oldbury
Just before 9 a.m., firefighters and paramedics were called to the Swim! facility in Oldbury, West Midlands. The pool had only been open six weeks when Adlington, 34, officially launched it.
A petrol-like cloud formed after chemicals were mixed in the pool, prompting an immediate evacuation. Incident commander Andrew Shakespeare from West Midlands Fire Service confirmed the leak happened in the pool’s plant room.
Evacuation and Cleanup Underway
- Ten people were evacuated, with two needing medical attention for breathing problems.
- The leak was contained inside the building and posed no danger to the public.
- Firefighters used breathing apparatus and hazardous materials equipment to secure the area.
- Teams ventilated the building and conducted air quality monitoring to ensure safety.
A West Midlands Fire Service update at 3 p.m. confirmed the situation was under control. “Firefighters have brought the incident to a successful conclusion,” officials said, with crews preparing to leave the scene shortly.
