Shocking Knife Attack in Solihull Indian Restaurant

A man has been convicted of attempted murder after a waiter was viciously stabbed in Solihull last December.

Waiter Stabbed Five Times After Holding Door

Oliver Parnell was sitting at a table in Lloyds Indian Restaurant in Knowle on 23 December 2023. When he suddenly got up to leave, the waiter kindly held the door open for him. Instead of walking out, Parnell pulled a carving knife from his pocket and stabbed the waiter five times.

Parnell then fled the scene but was quickly caught by restaurant staff, despite trying to attack them with the knife.

Victim Suffers Life-Changing Injuries

The 48-year-old waiter was rushed to hospital with serious stab wounds to his arms and stomach. He continues to recover from life-changing injuries.

Premeditated Attack, Police Say

During questioning, Parnell claimed he attacked the waiter because he feared an imminent threat. However, police uncovered evidence that the attack was planned in advance, including a journal and materials on his devices.

Detective Constable Iqra Raheel said: “Parnell planned the attack before even stepping into the restaurant. He brought his own knife, proving this was a premeditated assault, aimed at causing serious harm or worse.”

“The victim was simply doing a kind gesture by holding the door open and never expected to be attacked for it.”

Parnell, 27, was found guilty at Birmingham Crown Court on Monday 8 July of attempted murder and possession of a bladed weapon. Sentencing is due on 11 September.

Police Pledge Tough Action on Violence

“We do not tolerate serious violence in Solihull,” added DC Raheel. “We will do everything possible to bring violent offenders to justice and keep our community safe.”
