Tragic Death in Worksop Gas Explosion
A man in his 50s has died after a massive gas explosion tore through a terraced house in Worksop, Nottinghamshire, on Saturday night.
Blast Levels Home, Injures Several
Emergency crews were called to John Street just after 7.39pm on April 12 following reports of a huge explosion that rocked the neighbourhood. The blast obliterated one property and badly damaged nearby homes. This forced a major evacuation and a huge emergency services response.
Body Recovered from Rubble
Firefighters and specialist search teams worked through the night searching for trapped residents. Tragically, a man’s body was pulled from the debris the following morning and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
“Despite the best efforts of the responding emergency service personnel, he died at the scene. On behalf of Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service we would like to extend our sincere condolences to the man’s family and friends.”
Investigation Ongoing Amid Safety Warnings
The cause of the explosion is under police investigation. A cordon and road closures remain in place while structural assessments and forensic work continue. Residents have been warned to keep clear of the area.
Nottinghamshire Police also issued a strict warning against flying drones over the blast site, citing risks to emergency work and legal restrictions.
Shocked Locals Recall Terrifying Blast
Witnesses said the explosion shook the street and sounded like a bomb going off. One wrote on Facebook:
“I had just got home from mass and thought the back end of my car had blown off. It was that loud.”
Another added:
“We had just arrived at the Savoy and heard the bang and felt a shudder. Hope everyone is okay.”
Photos reveal total destruction—bricks, tiles, and glass litter the ground. Nearby roofs partially collapsed under the blast impact.
Evacuation and Community Support
About 20 people were forced from their homes and are now being supported at Crown Place Community Centre, while others stay with family or friends. Local councillor Mike Introna expressed his condolences:
“So sad to hear of the fatality and injuries following the gas explosion. Sincerest condolences to the family and friends of the gentleman.”
The fire service confirmed the property was “significantly damaged,” with concerns lingering over possible further collapse or gas leaks.
More updates to follow as investigators piece together what caused this deadly blast.
