Masked Man Terrorises Night-Time Walkers in Claverham
A 31-year-old man has been convicted for frightening locals by jumping out at victims wearing a homemade mask. Joshua Hunt, from Claverham, was found guilty at Bristol Magistrates’ Court on October 27 of intentionally causing harassment, alarm, or distress.
Victims Left Paranoid & Panicked by Horrific Encounters
Hunt struck under cover of darkness, terrifying victims with a skintight black suit and eerie homemade masks featuring stark white crosses over the eyes. One victim told the court it was like being trapped in a horror film—triggering panic attacks and deep paranoia. Another said it was “the worst night of her life,” forcing her to quit her job to escape the terror on her daily commute.
Police Crack Down: Fines, Compensation & Sexual Risk Order
- Hunt ordered to pay £200 to three victims and fined £100
- Interim Sexual Risk Order imposed amid fears of sexual motives
- Restrictions placed on clothing and behaviour to prevent repeats
- Review hearing set for November 3
Swift Police Action Nabs “Masked Menace”
The nightmare began in May with Hunt leaping in front of a car on Accommodation Road in Bleadon. Police arrived within three minutes, found Hunt in his van, and discovered several masks and dark clothing. More masks were seized from his home.
Chief Inspector Jonny Murray praised the fast response and reassured the public: “This behaviour is utterly unacceptable. We are committed to protecting the community and turning this conviction into a clear warning.”
Past Nuisance Incidents Didn’t Stick but Police Kept Watch
Hunt had previously been arrested over similar incidents in Cleeve, Claverham, and Yatton, sparking local alarm and media coverage. However, lack of evidence meant no charges before this latest crackdown.
Now backed by a Sexual Risk Order, Hunt faces serious restrictions to keep him off the streets and stop this masked menace from terrorising again.
