Son Stabs Mum to Death Outside Home in Burbage

A 23-year-old man has been handed a hybrid order after fatally stabbing his mother outside their home in Burbage. Gregor Bauld pleaded guilty to manslaughter on grounds of diminished responsibility at Leicester Crown Court today (Friday, 8 November).

Shock Attack on Morning of March 3

The tragedy unfolded on 3 March 2024 when East Midlands Ambulance Service rushed to The Coppice after reports of a woman in cardiac arrest. Despite frantic efforts from paramedics and bystanders, 55-year-old Christine Bauld died from multiple stab wounds.

CCTV footage and witness accounts revealed Gregor Bauld launched the attack outside their home. He was arrested at the scene and initially charged with murder. After a three-week trial, the jury found him not guilty of murder but he admitted manslaughter due to diminished responsibility.

Sentenced to Hybrid Order With Minimum Jail Time

Judge sentenced Bauld under Section 45A of the Mental Health Act, ordering him to spend time in hospital first. Once medically stable, he faces a minimum jail term of 13 years and 8 months.

“This was a horrific incident with tragic consequences, leaving a family devastated,” said Detective Inspector Mark Parish of the East Midlands Special Operations Unit. “Gregor was suffering from mental health issues at the time, and his family has shown immense bravery throughout the investigation and trial.”

He added, “We appreciate the courage of witnesses who supported the investigation and provided statements. Their cooperation was vital in seeking justice for Mrs Bauld’s family.”
