Baseball Bat Beating: Man Jailed for 14 Years Over Fatal Head Attack
Emdadul Islam, 23, was locked up at the Old Bailey on Tuesday, 1 May, after being found guilty of manslaughter. The tragic victim, 31-year-old Titu Miah, suffered a fatal head injury during a vicious fight in Newham back in October 2017.
Brutal Daytime Attack Shocks East London
The chilling incident unfolded on Plashet Road where a bloody brawl broke out involving several people. Islam, who was getting a haircut nearby, grabbed a baseball bat from his car and struck Mr Miah over the head—twice—causing a fractured skull that ultimately claimed his life five days later.
Islam also admitted to possessing an offensive weapon and was handed a 2-year sentence to run concurrently with his manslaughter term.
Another Man Pleads Guilty Over Stabbing
Yasin Patel, 21, stepped into the spotlight as well, admitting to stabbing a 16-year-old boy—who survived multiple wounds to his leg and chest—and assaulting Mr Miah during the same fight.
Patel’s sentencing is scheduled for Thursday, 3 May.
Family Left Devastated
“Losing my husband has left me barely coping,” said Shabina Patel, Titu Miah’s wife. “I am heavily depressed and struggling to sleep and eat. This loss has devastated our family beyond words.”
“Our seven-year-old daughter was very close to her dad, and seeing her pain breaks my heart. My son, undergoing severe eye treatment, is also struggling without his father’s support.”
“I don’t know how we’ll manage to carry on. We deeply miss him every day.”
Police Investigation and Arrests
- Police and paramedics were called to Plashet Road shortly after the fight broke out on 12 October 2017.
- The 16-year-old stabbing victim was hospitalised and later arrested but released with no further action.
- Islam was arrested after his solicitor contacted police; he surrendered on 23 October 2017.
- Detectives used CCTV to track Islam’s movements, confirming his presence at the scene and barbershop.
Detective Sergeant Perry Benton said: “Islam was not involved in the initial fight but took it upon himself to attack Titu with a baseball bat. This was a despicable, sudden act of violence on a residential street.”
The brutal 2017 attack forever changed the lives of those involved, leaving one man dead, a teenager seriously injured, and two men facing jail.
