A young driver has been locked up for over three years after a fatal crash near Charlecote claimed the life of a 74-year-old man.
James Beames Sentenced to Over Three Years for Deadly Crash
James David Beames, 21, from Lower Quinton, was jailed for 162 weeks at Warwick Crown Court on 9 March. He pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving.
The horror smash unfolded around 6am on 7 March 2024 on the B4086. Beames’ Ford Fiesta swerved into the path of a Microcar driven by John Edward Nutt, 74, from Wellesbourne.
Tragically, Mr Nutt died instantly at the scene.
Driving Ban and Fines Slammed on Beames
Along with his prison sentence, Beames was hit with a 78-month driving ban and ordered to pay a £228 victim surcharge.
Phone Use and Possible Fatigue Blamed for Crash
Investigator Craig Pearson revealed Beames used his phone multiple times during the journey, but there was no proof he was on it at the moment of impact.
Beames later claimed he fell asleep at the wheel, though this was never confirmed.
“What is clear is that the actions of one driver cost the life of an innocent man,” said PC Pearson.
“Our message to all drivers is simple – put your phone on safe mode or keep it out of reach. No call or message is worth a life.”
