A ruthless driver who deliberately mowed down a father before spinning a web of lies has been locked up for life.
Tragic Hit-and-Run on Ormscliffe Road
Lee Baker, 28, was killed on 21 July 2025 when Michael Povey, 29, drove his BMW straight into Lee and his brother on Ormscliffe Road, Rednal. The shocking attack came after an earlier argument between Lee, his brother, and three men. Lee’s brother managed to leap out of the way just in time, but Lee wasn’t so lucky. He suffered fatal traumatic head injuries at the scene.
Driver’s Panic and Web of Lies
After the crash, Povey mounted the pavement and smashed into a front wall before fleeing the scene. He then made a 999 call claiming his car was stolen by a “yob” and said he was too “scared” to return because “someone had been hurt.” His desperate attempt to dodge blame quickly unravelled.
Justice Served at Birmingham Crown Court
Povey, who has no fixed address, was found guilty of murder and pleaded guilty to perverting the course of justice on 6 February. On Friday 10 April, Birmingham Crown Court sentenced him to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 20 years. Justice for Lee Baker, a father senselessly taken in a vicious act on a quiet street.
