Man Jailed Over Fatal Butetown Attack
A man has been locked up for six years, with an extra three years on licence, following the death of Luke Higgins in Butetown, Cardiff.
David Smith, 43, admitted manslaughter and was sentenced at Cardiff Crown Court today (Friday, January 5).
Attack in Early Hours Leads to Tragedy
Police were called to a serious assault on Hansen Street at around 4:30am on Thursday, September 14, 2023. Luke Higgins, 40, from Butetown, was critically injured and rushed to the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff, where he died two days later on September 16.
Initially charged with grievous bodily harm, Smith’s charge was upgraded to manslaughter following Luke’s death. He pleaded guilty on November 27 and was returned to court for sentencing today.
He must serve at least two-thirds of his sentence before parole consideration.
Family Devastated as Justice Is Served
“My thoughts go out to Luke’s family and friends as they continue to come to terms with what happened that day,” said Detective Inspector Lianne Rees of South Wales Police.
“Luke was a much-loved father, brother and uncle, who is greatly missed. This tragic case highlights how one punch can kill and devastate many lives. I would also like to thank the Butetown community for their support.”
Heartbreaking Tributes from Loved Ones
Luke’s daughter Nikita Chick and his niece Amber Dacruz delivered powerful Victim Personal Statements in court.
Nikita said:
“My father’s death has left not only his family but everyone who knew him completely devastated and heartbroken.
“He will never meet his future grandchildren or walk me down the aisle. Our plans for the future will never come true.”
Amber added:
“Luke’s death has left an emptiness in our hearts that will never be filled. He was a son, father, brother, uncle and friend to many.
“Even popping into Cardiff town centre hurts now because we know we’ll never bump into Luke again.
“We will never hear his stories or his guitar playing ever again. All we can hope for now is that justice is served.
“Luke was loved by us all and many others, and will forever be in our hearts.”
