Man jailed over brutal death of dad in Emsworth robbery gone wrong

Loving father dies after vicious attack

Tarin Linfield, 21, has been locked up for more than five years for the manslaughter of Stephen Harrington, a 47-year-old father found with a serious head injury on Marlpit Lane on July 23, 2022. Stephen tragically died two days later in hospital.

Conviction follows botched theft

Linfield, from Common Road, Hambrook, denied murder charges but was found guilty of manslaughter and conspiracy to steal. He received a 7-year sentence that was cut to five years and four months after his guilty plea. A separate 15-month sentence for conspiracy to steal will run at the same time.

Accomplices face justice

  • Joseph Butler, 23, from Priors Leaze Lane, Hambrook, also pleaded not guilty to murder but admitted conspiracy to steal. He was given a 15-month suspended sentence.
  • Goldring, 21, initially charged with murder, died in prison before trial. His statements could not be used in court.

Prosecutors detail deadly raid

Authorities said the group targeted Stephen for theft. Police investigation revealed he died from a severe blow to the head, likely from a wooden weapon.

Detective Chief Inspector Gareth Hicks said: “Our thoughts continue to be with Stephen’s family and friends at this incredibly difficult time, and I hope this conviction and sentence for manslaughter will bring them some sense of closure.”
