Man Stabbed Over Car Debt in Chatham, Leaves Victim Seriously Injured
James Coffield of Albany Road, Gillingham, launched a brutal attack on a former friend over a money dispute. When he spotted the victim walking down Upbury Way, Chatham, Coffield accused him of owing cash for a car. Tempers flared, and things quickly turned violent.
Screwdriver Attack Sends Victim to Hospital
In a shocking blow-up, Coffield stabbed the victim three times—in the shoulder, arm, and chest—using a screwdriver. The attack happened just after 8 a.m. on October 13, 2018. After the assault, Coffield fled, leaving his long-time friend injured and needing urgent medical care.
Coffield Jailed for Nearly Four Years
Police arrested Coffield a week later, on October 20, 2018, charging him with Grievous Bodily Harm with Intent. On January 12, 2023, at Maidstone Crown Court, the 40-year-old was sentenced to three years and ten months behind bars. He also received a restraining order banning contact with the victim and was slapped with court costs.
Officer Praises Victim’s Courage
“This was an opportunistic assault in which Coffield inflicted serious injuries on a man he knew,” said investigating officer Nick Gellett. “It was a senseless attack over a minor financial dispute, and by luck, the victim wasn’t hurt worse.”
“I want to thank the victim for his bravery in supporting this case and confronting Coffield in court. Without his help, Coffield might never have been held accountable for his despicable actions.”
