Thug Jailed for Mugging Vulnerable Pensioner in Dartford

A heartless thug who targeted a vulnerable pensioner in Dartford has been locked up for 16 months.

Attack on Elderly Woman Waiting for Bus

On May 3, 2024, Sujeepan Mangaleswaren approached a woman in her 80s as she sat on a bench in Home Gardens waiting for a bus. Without warning, he grabbed at her handbag, yanking hard enough to pull the elderly victim to her feet.

A fierce struggle broke out, during which the bag’s handle snapped. Mangaleswaren then made a run for it but was quickly tackled by quick-thinking members of the public who had witnessed the desperate attack.

Robber Caught and Sentenced

Mangaleswaren, who has no fixed address, was detained by police at the scene. He later pleaded guilty to attempted robbery at Maidstone Crown Court and was sentenced on July 25 to 16 months behind bars.

Police Praise Public’s Brave Response

“This man targeted a vulnerable pensioner thinking he could swiftly make off with the contents of her handbag. He did not bargain for the response from the plucky victim who refused to release her property, or the public-spirited intervention from local people who had seen his appalling actions,” said investigating officer PC Thea Mazur.

“Mangaleswaren acted disgracefully without thought for the potential impact on his victim. Dartford will be a safer place now he is behind bars.”
