Hatred in Heaton: Racist thug jailed for four years over mosque attack
Alexander Bolam has been locked up for four years after a vile racist rampage at a mosque youth event in Newcastle. The court heard how Bolam unleashed a terrifying tirade against Muslim families, leaving the community shaken to the core.
Racist rampage at Heaton Mosque
The shocking incident happened on February 6, when Bolam targeted families attending a youth event at Heaton Mosque. Before the attack, he had posted hateful anti-Islam content online. Confronting worshippers as they left, Bolam made death threats, including threats to behead and blow up attendees — some as young as five years old. Adding insult to injury, he then urinated on the mosque’s door.
Community left scarred and fearful
Two brothers who faced down Bolam gave a powerful statement in court. They described the terror they and their community felt, with the sense of safety in Heaton shattered by the racist assault. “His actions have left a lasting wound on us all,” they said.
Judge slams “filthy desecration” and bans Bolam from mosques
Judge Julie Clemitson condemned Bolam’s “filthy act of desecration” and handed down the four-year sentence at Newcastle Crown Court. She slapped an indefinite restraining order on Bolam, barring him from attending or loitering near any mosque in England and Wales.
Bolam’s defence lawyer, Matthew Purves, told the court his client was “deeply remorseful” and ashamed of the terror he caused. But the damage to the Heaton community is clear, and justice has been served.
