Diamond Heist Mastermind Jailed Over £4 Million Loot

A French crook caught in an international diamond theft ring has been locked up for nearly four years.

Jewellery Job Worth Millions

Mickael Jovanovic, 27, from Le Blanc-Mesnil, France, was sentenced at Southwark Crown Court on 29 May to three years and eight months in prison.

He previously admitted conspiracy to steal diamonds valued at over £4 million in a 2016 jewellery heist.

Fake Buyers Pull Off High-Stakes Scam

Jovanovic and his crew posed as diamond buyers. Over weeks, they gained victims’ trust, even meeting in Monaco on 2 March 2016 to inspect jewels.

They told the seller someone would come to appraise the diamonds, then snuck over to the UK, booking a hotel in Ilford.

On 10 March, operating in groups across London, ‘Anna’—a gang member posing as a gemmologist—visited a Mayfair shop.

While performing a slick distraction trick, she swapped the real diamonds for fakes and left the padlocked bag back in the safe.

Quick Getaway Back to France

‘Anna’ met her co-conspirators on the street to hand over the stolen gems. Within three hours, the gang had fled back to France by train or car.

The victim grew suspicious when the promised payment never arrived and checked the bag, discovering the robbery.

Flying Squad Breaks the Case After Years on the Run

Police launched a Flying Squad investigation, tracing the gang through hours of CCTV. Despite the criminals’ use of minicabs, detectives tracked their movements and escape routes.

Images were shared with other forces as the hunt continued for four years.

On 30 January, Jovanovic was finally extradited from Italy, arrested, and charged.

Detective Constable William Man, Flying Squad: “This was a slick, audacious crime that played out like a film. The gang stole millions in diamonds and vanished in hours, but they left behind clues — from their hotel to the hired Citroen in Paris.

It took four years, but we never gave up. We’re still determined to catch everyone involved.”
