Exeter Rapist Gets 18 Years for Brutal Attack
A 47-year-old man has been slammed with an 18-year jail sentence for a savage sexual assault on a lone woman in Exeter. Cosmin-Nicolae Vasioiu was convicted of rape after a trial in May, with sentencing handed down yesterday at Exeter Crown Court.
DNA, CCTV Nail Romanian Offender
Originally from Romania but living in Exeter at the time, Vasioiu was also handed a 5-year extended licence period. He denied the crime, but overwhelming DNA, phone, and CCTV evidence sealed his fate.
Chilling CCTV Shows Stalking Before Attack
The victim, a woman in her 30s, was attacked in the early hours of Saturday, June 18, 2022. CCTV caught Vasioiu lurking around Exeter High Street, scouting for victims. He stalked his target near the Iron Bridge before launching the attack in St Bartholomew’s Cemetery close to Exe Street.
Desperate Attempt to Cover Tracks Fails
After the vicious assault, Vasioiu tried to dodge the law. He returned to his lodgings, stuffed his clothes in a bag, and got a friend to unknowingly wash them. He even shaved off his long hair in a bid to alter his looks.
Quick Police Action and Public Help Lead to Arrest
Thanks to a swift police investigation and public appeals, Vasioiu was arrested on June 21, just three days after the attack. The public’s response was key, providing vital CCTV footage that helped identify and track the predator.
Investigation Exposes Previous Swiss Conviction
Detective Sergeant Samantha Wenham praised the public’s support and pinpointed the thorough police work that led to the conviction. They uncovered a previous conviction in Switzerland for a similar crime where Vasioiu behaved alike post-attack. This evidence was crucial in securing justice.
Police Praise Victim’s Courage and Reassure Community
Superintendent Antony Hart, Exeter’s policing commander, hailed the victim’s bravery. He stressed no one should fear walking the streets and vowed the police will tackle such crimes head-on, working with partners to keep the city safe.
Deportation Looms After Prison Term
Vasioiu will serve his sentence in the UK before being deported back to Romania. The message is clear: predators will face justice and communities can feel safer.
