Grandson Jailed for Life After Brutal Granny Attack
Jack Forde, 25, was sentenced to life behind bars after savagely attacking his 74-year-old grandfather, Christopher Martin, and hiding his body in a cupboard. The shocking assault happened at their home on Wild Goose Drive, New Cross, leaving the family devastated and searching for answers.
Brutal Assault Exposed
Forde pleaded guilty to manslaughter by diminished responsibility. The court heard how he punched, stamped, stabbed, and even poured boiling water on his frail grandfather during the violent rampage. At the time, Forde believed he was his sister, Anushka, showing he was deeply disconnected from reality.
Tragic Background and Fatal Attack
- Forde had moved in with his grandfather after being released from prison in March 2021, following stabbings of two strangers a year earlier.
- Despite a verdict of not guilty by reason of insanity, he was released under supervision, which required epilepsy medication—medication he later stopped taking.
- The fatal attack struck after Forde grew angry about his grandfather helping his pregnant partner move out.
- In the early hours of May 28, 2021, Forde used his grandfather’s phone to FaceTime his partner, revealing the cupboard where Mr Martin lay before continuing the brutal assault.
Family Mourns as Court Hears Horrific Details
Mr Martin had recently lost his wife of 55 years to Covid-19. The cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head, chest, and abdomen. Forde’s partner witnessed the attack and called emergency services. Police quickly arrested Forde.
“A hardworking man who devoted his life to his family,” the victim’s relatives said in a statement. “No time will heal our broken hearts or erase the torturous memories of this cowardly, heinous act.”
Mitigation and Sentence
Forde’s defence highlighted a disturbing lack of support after his release, noting he stopped medication and fell into substance abuse. His background was marked by addiction and childhood abuse. Tragically, Forde killed the one person he loved most.
Judge Anthony Leonard KC condemned the injuries as “truly horrific” and handed down a life sentence with a minimum of 10 years and five months.
Calls for Better Mental Health Support
This brutal case shines a spotlight on the urgent need for improved mental health care and proper supervision to prevent more horrific tragedies like this in the future.
