Eastbourne man locked up for brutal string of assaults and control nightmare
Repeated violent attacks ended in jail
Joshua Crompton, 27, of Bedfordwell Road, Eastbourne, has been sentenced to three years in prison for controlling and violently assaulting a young woman over several years. Between 2022 and December 2024, Crompton kept his victim, now 21, under his thumb with repeated abuse, forcing her into submission through fear and violence.
Knife threat and strangulation horrors
One chilling attack in March 2023 saw Crompton hold a knife to the woman’s throat and strangle her until she lost consciousness. This was just one of many brutal assaults carried out both behind closed doors and in public.
Following the victim’s brave police report on December 20, 2024, Crompton launched another vicious attack the very next day—while she was still on the phone with an officer. She managed a desperate escape to a nearby business before officers arrived, but Crompton fled the scene. He was swiftly arrested and charged with:
- Four counts of intentional strangulation
- Three counts of assault
- Coercive and controlling behaviour
- Stalking
- Threatening with an offensive weapon
- Criminal damage
Guilty plea and harsh sentence
At Lewes Crown Court in January, Crompton pleaded guilty to two counts of strangulation, two counts of assault, and criminal damage. The other charges were dropped after discussions with the victim.
On February 7, he received a three-year prison sentence and an indefinite restraining order, ensuring he stays away from his victim indefinitely.
Police praise victim’s courage
“Crompton subjected his victim to repeated and prolonged assaults, causing her to fear for her life. The impact has been profound and long-lasting,” said Detective Constable Tania Snashall of Eastbourne’s Safeguarding Investigation Unit. “I do not underestimate the bravery it took for her to report him, but thanks to her, he is behind bars where he can cause no further harm. I hope this sentence allows her to begin rebuilding her life.”
