Man’s Jail Term Hiked After Terrifying Attack on Ex in Sandhurst
A Cambridge man’s jail sentence has been slammed up by 50% after a brutal attack on his ex-partner. Patrick Blenman, 56, originally got two and a half years behind bars but now faces three years and nine months following an appeal by Thames Valley Police.
Shocking Details of the Attack Unveiled
Blenman’s vicious assault happened in the early hours of 10 August 2021 at a property in Sandhurst. After attacking his former partner, a woman in her thirties, he padlocked her inside the house before setting fire to the front door. Terrified, the victim had no choice but to make a daring escape by jumping from a third-floor window.
Blenman was arrested on the same day and charged with assault, arson, and false imprisonment. A unanimous jury found him guilty of the charges but acquitted him of making threats to kill after a five-day trial in March.
Police Praise Victim’s Courage and Call for Support
“I’m delighted that Patrick Blenman’s sentence has been increased by fifty per cent at the Royal Courts of Justice today,” said Detective Constable Collette Adams. “This case shows that Thames Valley Police won’t hesitate to challenge sentences we find too lenient.”
“This was a harrowing ordeal for the victim, who was padlocked inside a building before the attacker set the door ablaze. She suffered injuries from the assault and the desperate escape, as well as psychological trauma.”
“Specially trained officers have supported the victim throughout, and I want to commend her bravery in coming forward. Thames Valley Police is relentless in pursuing those responsible for violence against women and girls, and last year we increased domestic abuse actions by 32%.”
“If you or someone you know is in an abusive relationship, please contact the police. We’re here to listen and support.”
