Kent Police Crack Down on Illegal E-Scooters in Margate
Kent Police have seized seven e-scooters in a major swoop targeting illegal electric scooter use in Margate. The crackdown kicked off on Monday 28 April 2025 after growing concerns from residents about reckless riders tearing through busy pedestrian spots.
Risky Riding on Pavements and with Kids
Officers patrolled hotspots like Northdown Road and Cliftonville, catching riders flouting the law left, right, and centre. Some were seen dangerously scooting on pavements, while others carried multiple passengers – including young children.
Inspector Richard Batten warned: “During the operation, we stopped a scooter where an adult was seen riding at speed with a child positioned at the front. A collision could have caused devastating injuries.”
He added that while e-scooters might seem like harmless fun, they are illegal on public roads, pavements, and cycle lanes in Kent. They can only be used legally on private land with permission.
Kent Not Included in Government E-Scooter Trial
Kent isn’t part of the Government’s official e-scooter trial scheme. This means all privately owned e-scooters used on public roads here are breaking the law and subject to seizure.
“We want to make it clear – anyone found riding e-scooters illegally in Thanet will face action,” Inspector Batten warned.
More Patrols Planned as Police Clamp Down
Police have pledged more proactive patrols throughout the summer to tackle dangerous riding. Residents are urged to think twice before buying e-scooters for children to prevent further risks to public safety.
