PC Christopher Harrison cleared over crash that killed pensioner Helen Hollands

Veteran Metropolitan Police escort rider PC Christopher Harrison, 68, has been found not guilty of causing death by careless driving. The tragic collision claimed the life of 81-year-old Helen Hollands in Earls Court last May.

Old Bailey Jury Delivers Verdict

After a lengthy trial at the Old Bailey, the jury acquitted PC Harrison. The crash happened while he was on duty with the Royalty and Specialist Protection Command during a police escort.

Met Police Offer Sympathy and Action

“Our thoughts and sympathies remain with Mrs Hollands’ family. We are deeply sorry for their loss,” said Commander Adam Slonecki, Specialist Operations.

He added that while nothing can undo the tragedy, new safety measures have been introduced. These include bullhorns fitted to escort motorcycles, used alongside whistles to alert the public of approaching police vehicles.

The Met highlighted the long wait for justice – two and a half years for PC Harrison – and the extended grief faced by Mrs Hollands’ family.

“We continue to push for quicker, fairer accountability processes to reduce the impact on everyone involved,” Slonecki said. “We will now swiftly review any possible misconduct matters concerning PC Harrison.”

Independent Investigations and Charges

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) launched both criminal and misconduct probes after the crash. The Crown Prosecution Service authorised charges against PC Harrison, leading to his trial and eventual acquittal.
