Met Police Officer Cleared Over Taser Incident That Left Man Seriously Injured
PC Imran Mahmood has been acquitted of assault after a dramatic 2020 Tasering incident in Haringey left a man with life-changing injuries. The verdict came down at Southwark Crown Court, ending a highly publicized trial.
Shocking 2020 Tasering on Burgoyne Road
On May 4, 2020, a man in his twenties fell from a wall on Burgoyne Road, N4, after PC Mahmood deployed his Taser. The fall caused serious, lasting injuries. Mahmood, part of the Met Taskforce, denied any wrongdoing when he pleaded not guilty back in April 2022.
Investigation and Verdict
The incident was thoroughly investigated by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC). After a tense trial, PC Mahmood was found not guilty of assault occasioning grievous bodily harm against Jordan Walker-Brown.
Police Response and Community Concerns
Detective Chief Superintendent Caroline Haines, responsible for policing in Enfield and Haringey, expressed sympathy for Walker-Brown and his family. She said:
“We recognise the significant impact this incident has had on their lives. We are committed to meeting with the family to address their concerns.”
DCS Haines admitted the incident has stirred worries across the community about police tactics. To tackle this, officers are working closely with community leaders and partners to boost trust and dialogue.
Taser Use Under the Spotlight
The police acknowledge the controversy around Tasers and the need for constant review. They insist Tasers are vital but reaffirm their commitment to regular training and involving the public in monitoring proper use. Mahmood has been on restricted duties since the episode, and now internal misconduct proceedings will decide his future with the force.
This case highlights the tricky balance police face between public safety and individual rights — and the urgent need for transparency and accountability in law enforcement.
