Police Pursuit Cleared After Man’s Tragic Death on Railway Tracks
The Metropolitan Police came under fire after a man died in Hounslow in April 2021. But an Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) probe has now cleared officers of wrongdoing, confirming they followed proper pursuit and driving rules.
How Did It Unfold?
Jafur Saker, 32, died on April 20, 2021, after fleeing a police chase and coming into contact with an electrified railway line near Hounslow Railway Station. He exited the vehicle officers were pursuing, a black Audi suspected of carrying false number plates. The 15-minute pursuit started just after midnight in Whitton.
At about 12:15am, Saker bailed from the car, which then crashed into metal railings near the station entrance. He ran inside and jumped onto the tracks, fatally touching the electrified line.
Inquest Finds Death By Misadventure
The inquest, which wrapped up on 10 March, ruled Saker’s death was misadventure. The jury said the police pursuit was proportionate and completely within guidelines. They noted Saker had several chances to stop but chose not to. His decision to enter the dangerous tracks was deliberate, they said.
Investigation Highlights and Police Mistake
The IOPC launched its investigation immediately after the incident and examined all evidence, including officers’ statements, police and rail staff inputs, and bodycam footage.
While no criminal or disciplinary offences were found against the officers, one officer made an inappropriate remark after Saker’s contact with the railway line. The IOPC ordered that officer to undergo reflective practice.
The watchdog also criticised the police for a delayed and inadequate notification to Saker’s family regarding his death. The force has since apologised for this mishandling.
IOPC Director Amanda Rowe: “Our thoughts remain with Mr Saker’s family and friends. The pursuit was appropriate, but the officer’s comments were concerning and are being addressed. We welcome the force’s apology for delays in informing the family, which undoubtedly added to their distress.”
The full report was shared with Saker’s family and the Coroner to help give clarity on this tragic case.
