Heroes of Leicester Square: Met Police Duo Nominated for National Bravery Awards
Two brave Met officers, PC Alannah Mulhall and PC Joe Gerrard, have been nominated for the 2024 National Police Bravery Awards. Their fearless actions during a violent knife attack in Leicester Square saved lives and put them in harm’s way.
Knife Attack Horror in Leicester Square
Just after midnight on September 16, 2022, PCs Mulhall and Gerrard rushed to a scene involving a spiking arrest and a victim needing help. Suddenly, a knife-wielding attacker surfaced on the street. Without hesitation, the officers stepped in to confront the threat.
PC Mulhall was stabbed deeply in the arm but stayed calm, calling for backup. The attacker ignored Tasers, PAVA spray, and baton strikes, continuing to threaten both officers and the public.
Bravery Under Fire
Focused on keeping bystanders safe, the officers held their ground. Tragically, PC Gerrard was stabbed multiple times, suffering severe wounds including a punctured lung. Quick medical care saved his life, and both officers later underwent surgery.
Despite their injuries, Mulhall and Gerrard returned to duty in 2023 and shared their experience to help improve future police safety.
Justice Served, Courage Honoured
The attacker was sentenced to life in prison with a minimum of 20 years behind bars on December 8, 2023, thanks to the officers’ determination and bravery.
“Their courage was pivotal in preventing fatalities,” said Metropolitan Police Federation Chair Rick Prior.
Inspector Michael Richards added, “Their unwavering bravery facing a dangerous suspect is inspirational.”
Superintendent Jill Horsfall praised their “remarkable bravery and resilience,” crediting them with stopping a violent offender.
PCs Mulhall and Gerrard embody the finest qualities of UK police — selfless, valiant, and committed to public safety. Their National Police Bravery Awards nomination is well deserved.
