Woman jailed for hit-and-run that killed disabled pensioner at pedestrian crossing
Four years behind bars for Naomi North
Naomi North, 30, has been sentenced to four years in prison after fleeing the scene of a fatal collision. The crash claimed the life of a disabled man in his 70s on a pelican crossing in Chatham.
Horrific crash on New Road
The tragedy happened just before 11pm on Monday, August 10, 2020. The elderly victim, who needed two sticks to walk, was nearly across the road when North, driving a Ford Fiesta, struck him despite flashing amber pedestrian warning lights. The man suffered multiple serious injuries and died instantly.
North admits panic but denies offence
During the investigation, North confessed she didn’t see the pedestrian and panicked after the collision. Instead of stopping, she sped off. Police arrested her the next day at a relative’s home.
At Maidstone Crown Court, North was found guilty of causing death by dangerous driving. She also received a 12-year driving ban.
Police highlight avoidable tragedy
“This collision was avoidable, especially given the good lighting and road conditions,” said Detective Sergeant Barry Goodsell of Kent Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit.
The force expressed deepest sympathies to the victim’s family, hoping the sentencing brings some closure amid their grief. The case stands as a stark warning about the deadly consequences of dangerous driving and callous hit-and-runs.
