Husband Convicted Over Pregnant Wife’s Mysterious 20-Year Disappearance

More than two decades after pregnant Debbie Griggs vanished from their Deal home, her husband Andrew has finally been found guilty of her murder. Debbie, a devoted mother of three, disappeared in May 1999 aged 34, and her body has never been found.

Cold Case Cracked After Years of Police Doggedness

Andrew Griggs, now 56, lied for years claiming Debbie was depressed and had simply walked out on him and their children. But police cold case detectives from Kent and Essex were not convinced. They reopened the investigation, submitted fresh evidence to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) in 2019, and secured a murder charge.

Following a gripping five-week trial at Canterbury Crown Court, Andrew was convicted on 28 October. Sentencing is due on Wednesday 30 October.

Bitter Marriage and Disappearance Mysteries

  • Andrew and Debbie moved into their Cross Road, Deal home in 1990 and married that year.
  • Their marriage soured over the years with frequent arguments and a brief separation in March 1999.
  • Debbie vanished after a heated evening on 5 May 1999. Andrew claimed she stormed out after shouting at him about coping with the kids alone.
  • Neighbours reported seeing Debbie’s white Peugeot 309 leaving their home early next morning.

Key Evidence and Lies Unravel

Police found traces of Debbie’s blood in the boot of her Peugeot, which had the inner lining removed. Andrew was first arrested in May 1999 but released due to lack of evidence. He later moved to Dorset in 2001, where he stayed until his arrest again in March 2019.

“Debbie was a loving mother of three young sons and with a fourth child on the way,” said Detective Chief Inspector Kaye Braybrook.

“Witnesses agreed she would never have abandoned her family and was nothing like the unstable, violent woman Andrew claimed. His conflicting accounts and attempts to tarnish Debbie’s reputation made it clear he was hiding the truth – that he killed her.”

“For 20 years, Andrew lived a callous lie while Debbie’s loved ones suffered without answers. Tragically, her mother died weeks before Andrew was charged, never knowing what happened to her daughter.”

Police continue to urge Andrew to reveal what really happened and where Debbie is, offering some hope for closure to her grieving family.
