Congressman Santos Slapped with 13 Criminal Charges
Rep. George Santos is in deep trouble, facing a 13-count indictment. Charges include wire fraud, money laundering, theft of public funds, and lying to the House of Representatives.
Arrested at Long Island Courthouse
Santos was hauled into custody on Wednesday at a federal courthouse on Long Island. He was expected to appear in court later that day. Shockingly, when asked by the Associated Press on Tuesday, Santos claimed he had no idea about the charges.
Scandal Over Fake Fundraising
The indictment alleges Santos duped supporters by collecting donations for a bogus company, promising the money would back his campaign. Instead, he splurged on designer clothes and cleared credit card debts.
More Lies and Fraud Surface
- Santos reportedly fed false financial details on his congressional disclosure forms.
- While working as a regional investment director and congressional candidate, he allegedly claimed and received unemployment benefits unlawfully.
US Attorney Breon Peace slammed Santos, saying: “Taken together, the allegations charge Santos with relying on repeated dishonesty and deception to ascend to the halls of Congress and enrich himself.”
