Visa Chaos Hits Ukrainian Refugees Fleeing War

The Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman has slammed the “chaos and confusion” faced by Ukrainian refugees trying to secure UK visas amid Russia’s brutal invasion.

MPs Hear Horror Stories

UK MPs reveal heartbreaking reports from constituents: relatives being turned away from visa centres in Poland, closures in Brussels, and waits stretching for weeks. Refugees are left in the dark about where to apply. Personal details are going missing, and applications are stuck in limbo.

These issues mirror the systemic failings the Ombudsman sees in Home Office complaints: slow processing, poor communication, weak signposting, and lost data.

Ombudsman Demands Immediate Home Office Action

Ombudsman Rob Behrens urged the Home Office to act fast. He demands cutting red tape, boosting resources, and making the visa process transparent and efficient.

“Millions of refugees from Ukraine have faced long and harrowing journeys to get to places of safety in Poland, Belgium, France and other countries. They want to be safe and reunited with their family members in the UK as soon as possible. It is vital the Home Office acts to correct failings in its handling of visa applications, especially failings we have previously reported and which we are seeing repeated here. In this horrendous situation, swift action is needed to make sure the process of getting a visa is simple, accessible and quick. Lives depend on it.”

— Rob Behrens, Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman

What Needs to Happen?

  • Scrap unnecessary delays and red tape in visa processing
  • Improve staffing and efficiency at visa centres
  • Provide clear information on application steps and locations
  • Ensure personal data is handled securely and not lost

The crisis demands urgent Home Office reform. Refugees fleeing war can’t afford to wait.
