Historic Church Ravaged by Blaze in Shocking Arson Attack

A cherished church built in 1861 suffered heavy damage in a massive arson fire that ripped through its roof and interior. Luckily, firefighters saved the main structure and brickwork of the Grade II-listed building.

Firefighters Race to Save Town Centre Landmark

On the evening of Monday 22nd June 2015, around 35 firefighters scrambled to tackle the flames on Church Road in Fleet. Crew Manager Jack Jacobs, among the first at the scene, described the chilling sight:

“When we first arrived we could see that the whole roof was involved in flames, so immediately requested more crews to help us to bring it under control. It was awful to see such a historic building, which is at the heart of the town, involved in a huge fire.”

Crews from Fleet 1 Station led the charge, quickly calling for backup. Units from Hartley Wintney, Portchester, Royal Berkshire Fire Rescue, and more joined the fight, working through the night to douse the relentless flames.

Community Pulls Together to Rebuild Beloved Church

Despite the devastation, the congregation rallied. After the arsonist was sentenced just months later, the church’s rebirth began.

“It was wonderful to be invited back and see how the church has been rebuilt and transformed over the past eight years,” said Crew Manager Jack Jacobs. “In response to the devastating incident, the congregation came together, restoring their beloved church, which continues to play a big role within the local community.”

Thanks to tireless restoration efforts, the church now stands proud once again — a symbol of resilience and faith in Fleet.
