Brighton Cop Jailed for Attempting to Pervert Justice
Ian Noakes, 41, a police constable from Brighton, has been locked up for one year after being found guilty of trying to pervert the course of justice. The verdict came following a trial at Brighton Crown Court on Friday, 2 July. Noakes appeared in custody for sentencing on Monday, 5 July.
Crime Committed Off-Duty and Unconnected to Police Work
The court revealed that Noakes was off duty when he committed the offence. Importantly, the crime was unrelated to any cases he was investigating. Noakes was also cleared of making threats to kill two acquaintances, also while off duty.
Suspended and Facing Disciplinary Action
Noakes is now suspended from duty and will face disciplinary proceedings by Sussex Police’s Professional Standards Department.
“I am extremely disappointed by PC Ian Noakes’ actions,” said Chief Superintendent Nick May. “Sussex Police expects the highest personal and professional standards of anyone who works for us. His action, whilst off duty, should not detract from the hard work that my officers and staff undertake every day. I am proud of the great work they do to protect communities.”
