Man in His 40s Dies After Being Hit by Car in Sandown on New Year’s Eve

A man in his 40s has tragically died in hospital after being struck by a car in Sandown on New Year’s Eve, police have confirmed.

Crash Details: Pedestrian Hit at Busy Roundabout

The incident happened on December 31, 2024, at the roundabout linking Avenue Road, High Street, and Culver Parade. A grey Nissan Qashqai driven by a 73-year-old man from Brading hit the pedestrian while negotiating the roundabout. Emergency services rushed to the scene after reports of the collision.

Witnesses say the victim, believed to be intoxicated, was running in and out of traffic near the location just moments before the crash. The vehicle came from the Esplanade before the tragic impact.

Urgent Medical Efforts and Fatal Outcome

The injured man was taken to St Mary’s Hospital on the Isle of Wight before being airlifted by the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance to Southampton General Hospital for specialist care. Despite the best efforts of medical teams, he sadly died earlier this week.

Police Investigation Underway

The Nissan driver was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving but has since been released under investigation. Officers have not confirmed if he has been re-arrested or if charges will change following the victim’s death.

Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary is appealing for anyone with information to come forward.

“We can confirm that a man in his 40s from Sandown has died following a collision on Avenue Road in Sandown on Tuesday 31st December. Our investigation is ongoing, and we urge anyone with information to come forward.”
