Top Philippine Court Orders Re-Arrest of Joel Reyes Over Slain Environmentalist
Joel Reyes Linked to Shocking 2011 Murder
The Philippines’ highest court has ordered the re-arrest of Joel Reyes, the former Palawan governor accused of masterminding the 2011 murder of outspoken environmentalist Gerry Ortega. The case has gripped the nation for over a decade. Ortega was gunned down in Palawan’s capital after using his radio show to expose alleged corruption and environmental crimes like illegal logging, mining, and fishing tied to Reyes.
Fugitive Turned Free, Now Back in Legal Crosshairs
Joel Reyes and his brother Mario vanished in 2012 after arrest warrants were issued. They were caught in Thailand three years later. Reyes was freed in 2018 when charges were dismissed, only for the government to appeal and revive the case nearly two years later.
Supreme Court Slams Door on Reyes’ Appeal
The Supreme Court had paused Reyes’ re-arrest while weighing his plea. But on Sunday, it threw out the appeal, demanding Palawan courts proceed with his arrest and trial.
Family Speaks Out, Reyes’ Lawyer Silent
“This decision restores our faith in justice,” said Patty Ortega, widow of Gerry Ortega. Reyes’ lawyer was unavailable for comment.
The Wider Fallout
The brutal slaying of an environmental warrior shocked the Philippines, a nation where journalists and activists sadly face deadly risks. Last year, Joel Reyes failed to reclaim his governor’s seat, and brother Mario also lost his bid for mayor.
