Piran Ditta Khan, the 76-year-old ringleader behind the brutal raid that killed Police Constable Sharon Beshenivsky nearly two decades ago, has died behind bars. Khan passed away at HMP Wakefield just months after being handed a life sentence for the deadly 2005 robbery.
A Tragedy That Shook Britain
PC Sharon Beshenivsky, 38, was fatally shot responding to an armed robbery at Universal Express travel agents in Bradford on November 18, 2005 — a day that also marked her young daughter’s fourth birthday. Her colleague, PC Teresa Milburn, was seriously injured but survived. Both officers were unarmed when the gang of seven struck.
Beshenivsky became only the seventh female officer killed in the line of duty in British history.
The Fugitive Mastermind’s Flight and Capture
Khan, the gang’s orchestrator and the only one familiar with the targeted business, fled to Pakistan immediately after the shooting. For nearly 15 years he evaded justice.
Pakistani authorities finally arrested Khan in January 2020. After years of legal battles, he was extradited to the UK in 2023, where Leeds Crown Court convicted him of murder, firearm offences, and possession of prohibited weapons.
In May 2024, Justice Hilliard gave Khan a life sentence with a 40-year minimum, noting his serious health issues meant he would likely die in prison.
Heartbreaking Words From the Beshenivsky Family
“The way we lost Sharon was in the most brutal, callous, and futile way. She never came home due to the actions and organisation of one person — Piran Ditta Khan,”
said Paul Beshenivsky, Sharon’s widower, during sentencing.
The murder devastated the community and sparked calls for better protection for unarmed officers and tougher gun control laws.
Justice Served, But The Pain Remains
With Khan’s death, all seven men involved in the raid are now behind bars or dead. Yet, as West Yorkshire Police said:
“While Khan’s passing marks the end of a long and difficult chapter, the pain and loss felt by Sharon’s family, friends, and colleagues will never truly fade.”
PC Beshenivsky’s legacy lives on through memorials and charities supporting families of fallen officers. As investigations into Khan’s death in custody get underway, the focus returns to remembering Sharon’s sacrifice and bravery.
