Elderly Woman’s Priceless Necklace Snatched in Brazen Mansfield Scam
Grim Theft on Raleigh Road
A shocking robbery unfolded just after noon on Wednesday, January 25, on Raleigh Road, Mansfield. A 71-year-old woman was about to board a bus when a car pulled up, sparking a sneaky theft.
Crafty Conwoman’s Dirty Trick
The vehicle arrived from Westfield Lane, driven by a man with a female passenger. The woman jumped out, claiming she was in pain and needed directions to the nearest hospital.
She struck up a chat with the pensioner, then suddenly wrapped her arms around her – grabbing an 18-carat gold necklace valued at around £5,000 as a “thank you.”
The crooks sped off towards Chester Street, leaving the victim stunned as she noticed her cherished necklace had vanished.
Police Seek Public’s Help
Detective Sergeant Matt Dumbrell described it as a “vile distraction tactic.” He revealed the necklace had been in the victim’s family for over 40 years.
“The victim thought she was being helpful when stopped by the suspect claiming she needed hospital treatment. This was an appalling act, and we will do everything to bring those responsible to justice.”
Witnesses describe the suspects as a man and woman in their 30s, both with foreign accents. The woman wore a large scarf and had dark hair.
Two suspects have been arrested but released on bail. Officers urge anyone approached by a similar couple to speak up. They want to piece together the pair’s movements and prevent them from targeting more elderly victims.
