Bournemouth on Edge as Protests Loom
Dorset Police are gearing up for possible clashes today in Bournemouth. Tensions are high as an anti-immigration rally is set to face off against a “Stop the Far Right” counter-protest. The force has warned it will do everything to stop serious violence breaking out.
Double Protests Kick Off at 11am
The demonstrations start around 11am near Bournemouth Civic Centre. One group will campaign against immigration, while the other stands against the far right. Dorset Police have promised to keep a close watch and maintain order throughout.
Strict Measures in Place to Curb Disorder
- Police have new powers to stop and search without reasonable suspicion.
- Hate, violence, or disorder will not be tolerated.
- Offenders face arrest, charges, and court appearances.
“We will not tolerate any hate, violence, or disorder in our communities. Offenders can expect to be arrested, charged, and brought before the courts,” said Assistant Chief Constable Mark Callaghan.
Context: Recent Violence Sparks Crackdown
The increased security follows nationwide unrest after three young girls were fatally stabbed in Southport. False claims about the attacker being an illegal immigrant have stoked tensions, triggering far-right riots across UK cities. Hundreds have been arrested so far, with some jailed for up to five years.
Dorset Police are determined to stop similar violence erupting in Bournemouth and have been working with protest organisers, local groups, and businesses to keep things peaceful. Extra officers from the region have been drafted in to support the operation.
Local Leaders Call for Calm
Councillor Millie Earl, Liberal Democrat leader of Bournemouth, Christchurch, and Poole Council, urged calm. She said: “We are immensely proud of the diverse and vibrant communities that make Bournemouth special. We are committed to keeping BCP a welcoming sanctuary for all who call our three towns home.”
Police Urge Peaceful Protests
Authorities have stressed that public safety is the top priority. They’re urging everyone attending to keep protests peaceful and lawful to avoid any repeat of recent violent incidents.
