Sunak Slams EDL Violence on Armistice Day
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has blasted the violent scenes that erupted during Armistice Day protests. The clashes involved the far-right English Defence League (EDL), allied groups, and some marchers in the National March for Palestine.
Violence Tarnishes Remembrance Weekend
Sunak called the disturbances “violent, wholly unacceptable scenes” that ruined the solemnity of the weekend dedicated to remembering those who gave their lives for Britain. He condemned the EDL’s attacks on police officers and the shocking trespass on the Cenotaph memorial.
“These actions not only disrespect peaceful protesters but also dishonour the memory of our fallen heroes,” the Prime Minister declared.
Antisemitic Chants and Pro-Hamas Signs Alarm Communities
The Premier also denounced antisemitic chanting and pro-Hamas placards seen during the Palestine march. Speaking on the fear felt by the Jewish community, he called the intimidation “deplorable.”
Swift Justice Demanded, Police Under Pressure
Sunak revealed he has already spoken to the Metropolitan Police Commissioner about cracking down hard on the criminality. He promised “the full force of the law” will be brought against the offenders.
The Prime Minister will meet the Met Police chief again soon to review the fallout and ensure public order is restored before future commemorations.
This strong stance shows the government’s zero tolerance for violence and intimidation, especially during key national ceremonies.
