Prison Officer’s Scandalous Affair with Inmate Exposed at HMP Five Wells
A steamy secret relationship between a prison officer and a convicted armed robber has rocked HMP Five Wells and the local community.
Intimate Photos and Letters Blow the Lid Off the Romance
Rachel Stanton, 31, a trainee security manager from Irthlingborough, is at the centre of the scandal. The prison uncovered explicit photos and a sexual letter linking her to Edwin Poole, serving 10-and-a-half years for armed robbery.
During a routine cell check, officers found the evidence. CCTV footage then revealed Stanton and Poole locked in a storeroom together for over an hour, confirming their illicit affair.
Guilty Plea and Court Drama
Stanton admitted wilful misconduct in a public office at Northampton Crown Court. Judge David Herbert KC slammed her breach of trust, despite the couple having a child from their relationship.
Defence lawyer Lee Egan said: “She did not smuggle contraband nor exploit her role beyond this relationship. Stanton is an inexperienced officer, on the cusp of advanced training to manage an entire prison landing.”
Immediate Fallout and Security Concerns
- Relationship began before July 2022 discovery
- Stanton suspended; inmate Poole transferred
- Couple have since split despite ongoing contact
- Case sparks urgent review of staff conduct and prison security at HMP Five Wells
The scandal highlights serious issues in staff training and oversight, prompting prison authorities to tighten protocols to stop such breaches in future.
