Beckenham Man Jailed for Brutal Girlfriend Attacks
Shelford Brizey, 48, has been locked up for five and a half years after a horrific spate of assaults on his girlfriend. The violent ordeal came to a head in a Camberwell hotel, revealing grim truths about domestic abuse still lurking in UK homes.
Convicted of Strangulation and Assault
On November 16, Brizey was found guilty of two counts of strangulation, two counts of assault causing actual bodily harm, and two counts of assault by beating. This isn’t his first run-in with the law — he served 10 years following a 2004 armed robbery at a post office.
Jealous Rage Sparks Violent Pattern
The court was told Brizey met his victim at a pub, but jealousy and insecurity quickly turned their relationship poisonous. The victim suffered, especially due to her mental health struggles, becoming an easy target for Brizey’s repeated violent outbursts.
- He punched her twice in the face at Euston Station car park.
- Strangled her in a hotel room until she lost consciousness.
- Despite fleeting remorse—sending flowers and cards—he kept returning to abuse.
Public Attack and Arrest
The violence hit boiling point on April 8. Brizey, convinced his girlfriend had given her number to another man, launched a brutal attack in a Camberwell hotel. The victim fled into the lobby, finding safety with a passing couple. Police promptly arrested Brizey, who’s been held since.
Jury Smashes Defense Claims
Brizey tried to pin injuries on lies or self-harm, but the jury saw through his excuses and convicted him.
Victim Speaks Out on Trauma
“The abuse worsened my PTSD, caused significant weight loss, and left me deeply mistrusting,” the victim said in a victim impact statement read by prosecutor Ms Langevad. “My children are terrified, forcing our family to consider leaving our home of 20 years.”
Harsh Sentence and Long Restraining Order
Judge Richard handed down a 5½-year prison sentence and slapped a seven-year restraining order on Brizey. The tough verdict aims to protect the victim and her family from future harm.
This Beckenham case is a stark reminder: domestic violence victims need protection, and repeat offenders face serious consequences.
