Exeter Bomb Evacuees Can Return – But Some Must Stay Put Tonight
Most Residents Allowed Home After WW2 Bomb Blast
Residents evacuated from their homes in Exeter following the controlled detonation of a 1,000kg World War Two ‘Hermann bomb’ can finally return tonight – but with a catch. Those living within the 100-metre exclusion zone around Glenthorne Road remain off-limits this evening.
The bomb was safely detonated at 6.10pm on Saturday, February 27. By 6pm Sunday, evacuees outside the tight 100m cordon – but still within the larger 400-metre safety zone – were given the green light to return.
Safety Checks and Roadblocks Still in Place
Since the blast, emergency teams have been hard at work. Multiple agencies have carried out vital safety assessments. A crane was used to remove huge metal sections from nearby roofs – protective gear set up by the Ministry of Defence to contain the bomb.
Strong fencing now surrounds the 100-metre exclusion zone, including parts of Glenthorne Road, Cowley View, Jefford House, and Charleston House. Exeter City Council is contacting all residents in this zone, particularly those staying in hotels arranged by the council, to ensure their wellbeing.
Evacuated Residents Advised: Don’t Return Without Clearance
- If you live inside the 100-metre exclusion zone and haven’t heard from the council, call the helpline at 0345 155 1015. The line is open until 7pm tonight and reopens at 9am tomorrow.
- Residents provided with hotel rooms can stay there tonight if they prefer.
- Exeter University’s 1,400 evacuated students from local halls of residence have been told they will not return today.
- Livewest tenants should contact their provider on 0300 123 8080 before heading home.
Community Thanks and Ongoing Efforts
Dozens of volunteers, including Dartmoor Search and Rescue, Coastguard, and Devon & Cornwall 4×4 Response, joined police and council officials in the operation. Authorities expressed gratitude for the community’s patience through this tense episode.
Building assessments continue within the safety cordon. While efforts aim for a quick wrap-up, residents are urged to prepare for the possibility they may stay out longer than hoped.
For advice or support, evacuated residents should call the council helpline at 0345 155 1015, open until 5pm today.
