Nottingham Mental Health Trust Under Intense Scrutiny After Tragic Killings

After the horrific murders of Barnaby Webber, Grace O’Malley-Kumar, and Ian Coates in Nottingham last June, Health Secretary Victoria Atkins has launched a full-scale review of Nottinghamshire Healthcare Foundation Trust. This comes amid serious concerns over how the Trust managed Valdo Calocane, a patient with paranoid schizophrenia linked to the deaths.

Care Quality Commission Leads Tough Probe

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) will spearhead the review, working alongside an Independent Mental Health Homicide Review ordered by NHS England. This twin investigation will uncover crucial details about patient care, safety failings, and public protection. The CQC will examine witness statements and criminal trial evidence to get to the heart of the matter.

March Deadline Set for Answers

Victoria Atkins has demanded urgent action, with the CQC’s findings expected by March. The government will then respond swiftly, promising accountability and changes. Atkins said, “Our mental health services must ensure both the care of patients and the safety of the public. I hope the review provides knock-out answers and helps Nottinghamshire improve its mental health care.”

Wider Failings Exposed at Highbury and Rampton Hospitals

  • Staff suspensions at Highbury Hospital are under investigation.
  • A rapid improvement plan and new oversight board are already in place.
  • Rampton Hospital, a high-security unit within the Trust, was rated ‘inadequate’ by the CQC.
  • The regulator will assess progress since that damning report.

CQC’s Mental Health Director Chris Dzikiti confirmed, “We will conduct a rapid review into mental health services in Nottingham to identify practical actions for safe, quality care.”

National Mental Health Safety Investigations Kick Off

The government also announced a new nationwide probe by the Health Services Safety Investigations Body, targeting inpatient mental health care. They will investigate inpatient deaths and the tricky transition from child to adult mental health services. This probe aims to raise safety standards right across the UK.

NHS’s mental health chief Claire Murdoch added, “It is essential that all agencies are thoroughly reviewed to ensure the right action is taken.”
