Robber Caught Red-Handed After Bizarre Barricade Standoff in Reading
Mark Beech, 45, from Arborfield Cross, Reading, pleaded guilty to a brazen robbery and burglary at a multi-occupancy property on Aldershot Road. The drama unfolded at 9.45pm on Sunday, 23 April 2017, when officers swooped in fast, catching Beech before he could escape.
Forced Entry Sparks Terrifying Ordeal
Beech smashed his way into the property, ransacking one room and grabbing a haul that included cash, cigarettes, two mobile phones, a charger, and a bottle of cologne. Not done yet, he then attempted to smash through another door, desperate to snatch more money from occupants inside.
Victims’ Quick Thinking Saves the Day
Fearing for their safety, the residents barricaded themselves in a room. In a tense moment, they passed cash under the door to try and appease Beech — all while he shouted at them to hand it over.
Beech’s Guilty Plea and Police Praise
At Guildford Crown Court on Friday, 26 May, Beech admitted stealing:
- A quantity of cash
- Ten packs of 25 cigarettes each
- Black Nokia Lumia mobile phone
- Black HTC One Touch mobile phone
- Nokia phone charger
- Bottle of Davidoff cologne
“This was obviously a terrifying ordeal for the victims who had to endure Beech shouting at them through the door demanding they hand over money,” said Detective Constable Aodhan Lawrence. “We commend their bravery and calmness during the ordeal and hope the victims now take some comfort from the sentence Beech has been given.”
