Face Covering Ban Imposed in Epping Amid Protest Chaos
Essex Police have slapped a Section 60AA order on Epping tonight. This tough new rule comes ahead of another planned protest, after violent scenes erupted outside the Bell Hotel on Thursday.
The order, under Section 60AA of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994, lets cops demand people remove face coverings. The crackdown is designed to stop masked troublemakers and keep everyone safe.
The order kicked in this afternoon and will stay active until Monday morning, July 21. It targets key spots across Epping, including the Epping Underground Station.
Police Promise to Protect Peaceful Protest – But Will Crack Down on Violence
Just hours before tonight’s rally, Essex Police made it clear they back lawful protests but won’t tolerate chaos.
“We will police impartially, without fear or favour,” said the force.
“The right to peaceful protest is protected by law… but this must be done respectfully. If there is a risk to public order, we will act appropriately.”
The warning comes after Thursday’s violent showdown at the Bell Hotel, where eight officers were hurt and multiple arrests followed. Protesters clashed with opponents, with footage showing missiles thrown and property damaged.
One Arrest Made Tonight – Charges Follow Thursday’s Mayhem
Police confirmed they’ve already detained one person this evening as part of the ongoing operation. That suspect is in police custody now.
Meanwhile, Keith Silk, 33, from Loughton, faces charges of violent disorder and criminal damage over the Thursday riot. He is due in Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court on Monday morning.
Officers also warned: refusal to remove face coverings under the Section 60AA order can lead to arrest and jail time.
Community Anger Sparks Protest Over Migrant Accommodation
Thursday’s unrest was sparked by local fury at the Bell Hotel being used to house migrants, especially after asylum seeker Hadush Gerberslasie Kebatu, 38, was charged with multiple sexual offences involving a 14-year-old girl.
Chief Superintendent Simon Anslow said: “We understand the concerns of the local community and support the right to protest—but violence and disorder will not be tolerated. This is about protecting everyone’s safety and rights.”
Heavy Police Presence and Travel Disruptions Expected
Expect heavy police patrols across Epping tonight. Road closures, controlled entry points, and boosted security will be in place near the Bell Hotel and Epping Underground Station.
Police urge all protesters to keep it lawful, drop any face coverings unless required for health reasons, and respect public safety.
