Hove Horror: Man Gets Five Life Sentences for Brutal Rape and Abuse Spree
Charles Durdle, 26, from Hove, has been slammed with five life sentences for torturing a woman with relentless rapes, vicious assaults, and psychological torment. The shocking case has rocked the local community and exposed the devastating effects of his crimes.
Months of Terror and Control
The nightmare began in April 2022 when Durdle first raped the victim, a woman in her 20s, at a Hove property. From then until September 2022, he subjected her to near-daily sexual assaults, isolating her from friends and family, tightening his grip on her life with terrifying control.
The abuse wasn’t just sexual. The victim was left physically shattered, losing a staggering 38kg over 18 months. Horrifically, Durdle once tied a noose around her neck, causing life-threatening asphyxiation injuries.
Brave Victim Breaks Silence
In September 2022, the victim found the courage to report Durdle after discovering he had shared explicit videos of her online. She detailed harrowing threats and repeated violence, shining a light on a dark and hidden hell.
Durdle was found to have breached a Sexual Harm Prevention Order and charged with rape, assault, strangulation, making indecent images of a child, and coercive control.
Justice Served at Lewes Crown Court
At Lewes Crown Court on October 20, Durdle pleaded guilty to all counts. The judge handed down five concurrent life sentences with a minimum of 10 years and two months inside. An indefinite restraining order was also imposed, and Durdle will remain on the sex offenders’ register for life.
“I feel trapped inside my own body,” the victim stated. “Every memory of the assaults haunts me. I struggle to trust and connect with others.”
Detective Urges Victims to Speak Out
Detective Chief Superintendent Richard McDonagh praised the victim’s bravery, saying, “This was an incredibly difficult and traumatic case. Anyone suffering controlling or abusive behaviour should know they will be believed, supported, and justice will be pursued.”
