Man Stabs Mother to Death in Southwark
Edward Watkins, 55, of Ethnard Road, SE15, has been handed a hospital order after fatally stabbing his 75-year-old mother, Maureen Watkins, in their Southwark home.
Fatal Stabbing Shocks Local Community
The tragic attack happened in November 2018. Police were called to Ethnard Road at 4.04pm. Officers found Maureen with multiple stab wounds. Paramedics battled to save her, but she was pronounced dead at 4.37pm.
Swift Arrest and Court Guilty Plea
Detectives from the Homicide and Major Crime Command arrested Edward Watkins the same night. At Central Criminal Court on Thursday, 9 May, he pleaded guilty to manslaughter due to diminished responsibility.
Hospital Order Imposed Under Mental Health Act
Watkins was sentenced to a hospital order under sections 37/41 of the Mental Health Act. The case highlights the tragic consequences of mental health problems left untreated.
