Swindon Hit-and-Run Driver Jailed Over Life-Threatening Attack
A 20-year-old Swindon man has been locked up for over six years after a brutal hit-and-run left a young man fighting for his life in Rodbourne.
High-Speed Kerb Attack Near Designer Outlet
Mohammed Shajeed Ali, of Warneford Close, Toothill, pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm (GBH) at Swindon Crown Court.
The shocking incident unfolded just after 3pm on Friday, March 6. The victim, a man in his 20s, was walking back from Swindon town centre with friends near the Designer Outlet Village when Ali’s grey Nissan Juke sped onto the kerb.
Witnesses estimated Ali’s speed at 40 to 50mph as he mounted the pavement – catching the group’s backs turned. The car clipped one person before hitting the victim full-force, sending him airborne and unconscious.
Victim Airlifted After Life-Threatening Injuries
The victim suffered a serious head injury and was airlifted to Southmead Hospital, bristol/" title="Bristol" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">Bristol, in critical condition. Thankfully, he has now made a recovery.
Ali fled at speed, but police tracked down the car less than an hour later. The vehicle’s registered owner confirmed Ali was driving at the time. Ali has also been banned from driving for two years.
Police Praise Public’s Help in Securing Justice
“Ali’s victim was fortunate not to die from his injuries,” said Detective Chief Inspector Phil Walker. “This reckless and violent act put innocent lives at risk. It’s lucky no one else was seriously hurt.”
“I’d like to thank those at the scene who helped the victim before medical aid arrived, along with witnesses who came forward to help secure this guilty plea.”
