Tree Thugs Jailed for Felling Iconic Sycamore Gap
Two men behind the shocking destruction of the famous Sycamore Gap tree have been slammed with jail time. At Newcastle Crown Court today, Daniel Graham, 39, and Adam Carruthers, 32, were handed sentences totalling four years and three months for criminal damage. Their reckless act didn’t stop at the tree—they also damaged Hadrian’s Wall, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, earning an additional six-month sentence to run concurrently.
‘Moronic Mission’ in the Dead of Night
The pair drove over 40 miles to the stunning Northumberland site and chopped down the beloved tree in the dead of night on 28 September 2023. The nation watched in horror as the “iconic guardian of Hadrian’s Wall” was felled. What followed was a spectacular fallout between the two vandals, sealing their fate.
National Icon Lost Forever
The Sycamore Gap tree wasn’t just any tree. Nestled between rolling hills, it was one of the UK’s most photographed natural landmarks and starred in films like Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. Its destruction sparked nationwide outrage and deep grief among locals and visitors alike.
The landowners, the National Trust, are now consulting on how best to honour the lost landmark. Ideas include replanting efforts or erecting a fitting memorial to preserve its memory.
