Teen Brutally Attacks Schoolmates and Teacher with Hammer

A 17-year-old boy was handed a life sentence today, with a minimum of 12 years behind bars, for a savage hammer attack at prestigious Blundell’s School in Tiverton, Devon. The teen, who was 16 at the time, viciously assaulted two fellow pupils and a housemaster in a terrifying pre-dawn rampage.

Attack in Dormitory Leaves Victims Critically Injured

On 9 June 2023, just before 1am, the boy armed himself with one or more claw hammers and climbed into the dorm rooms of his 15- and 16-year-old victims while they slept. He struck repeatedly, inflicting multiple skull fractures and serious injuries to ribs, lungs, and back. The brutal assault left one teen with permanent cognitive damage after spending months in hospital.

Housemaster Henry Roffe-Silvester rushed to intervene. Despite being struck over the head multiple times, he managed to disarm the attacker and call for emergency help. Several pupils also joined efforts to stop the attack until paramedics arrived.

Jury Rejects Sleepwalking Defence

The youngster denied three counts of attempted murder, claiming he was sleepwalking and influenced by horror films. But a 10-week trial at Exeter Crown Court proved otherwise. Prosecutors revealed chilling internet searches on his devices, including queries about hammer attacks, child serial killers, and school massacres.

James Dawes KC, leading the prosecution, said the assault was “deliberate” and “savage,” aiming to cause maximum harm. Evidence showed the teen was fully conscious, including listening to music moments before the attack.

Detective Inspector Dave Egan called the attack “unprovoked, brutal, and savage,” confirming the offender’s intent “to kill” and that the crime was “months in the planning.”

Sentenced to Life – Victims and School Speak Out

The judge sentenced the offender to life imprisonment, with a 12-year minimum before parole consideration.

“We would like to thank everyone who assisted in our son’s recovery—from the school community to the paramedics, doctors, and surgeons. We are eternally grateful for your interventions. The police and prosecution team have helped us navigate this horrific case with professionalism and compassion,” said the family of one victim.

The family of the other teen victim added, “I am pleased with how the investigation was conducted. We look forward to moving on, and hope my son continues to recover and has a bright future ahead.”

Blundell’s School stated it remains committed to supporting victims and restoring safety for all students after this tragic ordeal.
